So I set off with grand ideas of a bike / hike / bike up and then a balls out blast down Screel... Screel hill, near Castle Douglas, is not a particularly big hill standing at a modest 344m, however it is jagged, rocky, rooty and very boggy. I hike-a-biked it on the way up, made it to the top, but it became clear to me pretty quickly that a lot of the route was not going to be ridable going down - well not by me on a wet October day. The granite chunks protrude from the saturated bog and really want to grab your front wheel and pitch you off. The roots, always off camber and wet, wished that you'd slip at every turn of a crank. I really wasn't sure if I'd upload this video, it's not particularly exciting, but at least it will give you some ideas if you‘re thinking of riding Screel - ideally do it on a nice dry summers day, it would be a really different ride in those conditions. I extended the ride by going out to Almerness house and returning to Palnackie through the woods of Castle Hill and the tidal marsh of Glen Isle - It was insanely wet, and that was with the tide a long way out! An exploring ride! You can't hit a trail centre every time, right!? ------------------------------------- 🎥 Instagram: / the_dunc_g 🗺 Route on Strava: / strava
