Root canal treatment is a highly skilled technique sensitive procedure wherein the infected contents inside the tooth are removed and the canals are cleaned and enlarged and then they are filled with an inert material so that the tooth remains and is not infected anymore and it performs in function. All root canal treated teeth may not be successful. There might be chances of failure. These teeth if at all failed may be taken up for retreatment. This decision depends upon the dentist, his skill and experience and the retreatment will be based on whether it may be successful or not or whether he should go for removal of the tooth and replace it with a dental implant. Therefore the option of retreatment lies with the dentist keeping the patient informed. The method of retreatment is almost the same as that of the original treatment procedure. Only difference lies here is that the content of the canal which have been filled has to be removed and the same procedure of debridement and irrigation is done using some medicaments and the root canal is filled with the same thing. Caution should be taken that in case there are some additional canals which there may be which have been overlooked in the first place should be filled up which may be the cause of failure.
