This video is about native New Yorker, Katwy Heru, who in 2012 left New York City to pursue love in the Philippines with Mariafe, a Filipina working for an American company based in Manila. After love was conquered, the American/Filipina couple found themselves residing in Iloilo City, Philippines, while Katwy embarked on his PHD in Management at Central Philippine University. While pursuing his doctorate at Central Philippine University, Katwy, in conjunction with his team, developed a feasibility study, which later turned into an actual proposed project that he presented to the Philippine Department of Agriculture. The result of the feasibility study/ proposal secured an actual grant through the Philippine Department of Agriculture and World Bank. This pathed the way for the “phenomenal opportunity” to bring the results of Katwy’s feasibility study to life and develop Heru Farm de Bingawan, nestled in the Province of Iloilo. Katwy and Mariafe’s vision for Heru Farm de Bingawan is focused on creating a community inspired space that offers interactive training that develops a co-creative partnership with local communities, and to replicate their business and agriculture model to other areas of the Philippines. Heru’s focus is to be a catalyst for sustainable agriculture and development in the entire country of the Philippines. In 2017 the first major project of the nearly 10-acre farm made possible through the secured grant was the development of the 329 square meter Vermicompost facility that uses 100% renewable and eco-sustainable materials to produce organic soil produced by what Katwy calls the “hardest working members of the farm”, the Vermicompost Worms. A secondary compliment to the agricultural component in development at Heru Farm de Bingwan is a premier Ecological Tourism Site that features a self-sustainable environment that provides a break from urban areas and dependencies. Katwy and Mariafe’s dream is in its early stages, but together they have already made a large impact on the local community and in the realm of agriculture in the Philippines. This video also tells the story of an American expat escaping the hustle culture of New York City, and his experiences that brought him to the Philippines. It is a fine story that breaks the mold of “expats only come to the Philippines to take”. This is a story of an expat giving back to the Philippines and how his move from New York helped him find a higher purpose and fulling life directed connected to agriculture and community in the Philippines. When not spending time and living on the farm, Katwy and Mariafe reside in Iloilo City with their four children.
