In the latest update from authorities amid the search for Nancy Guthrie, the Federal Bureau of Investigations confirmed they have arrested someone who was impersonating the 84-year-old’s captor in a fake demand. “We believe there is no evidence to connect this to Nancy’s case,” Heith Janke, the special agent in charge of the bureau’s Phoenix division said at a Feb. 5 press conference after confirming the arrest. “It was someone that was trying to profit from it. A total imposter.” While no details about the person taken into custody were shared, Janke added, “a complaint will be presented to a magistrate judge later today.” Meanwhile, Janke shared that investigators are taking another ransom note—one that was sent to national and local media outlets—“extremely seriously.” As he noted, “The one that went to the media is the one we’re currently investigating and working on.
