Mother and Her Little Children In a small village nestled beside lush green rice fields, stood a simple thatched-roof house. In that house lived a mother named Lan and her three young children: Minh, An, and Bé Na. Their life wasn't wealthy, but it was always filled with laughter. Every morning, as the sun rose from behind the coconut trees, Mother Lan would wake up. She would gently light the fire and cook hot porridge for her children. The fragrant aroma of the kitchen filled the small house. Minh, the eldest, 10 years old, loved his mother dearly. He often helped her with water or sweeping the yard. An was more active, always running and jumping around. And little Na, only 4 years old, always clung to her mother, asking all sorts of questions. One morning, it rained heavily, the raindrops pattering on the thatched roof. Minh looked outside and asked: "Mom, are you going to the fields today? It's raining so hard." Mother Lan Nhung, kind and gentle, said: “If I don’t go to the fields, how will I buy rice for you children to eat?” Hearing this, Minh fell silent. He looked at his mother’s hands – fingers calloused from hard work. An trembled and hugged his mother: “When I grow up, I’ll earn a lot of money so you don’t have to work so hard anymore.” Mother Lan smiled, stroking her children’s heads: “As long as you children are well and study hard, that’s my greatest joy.” Difficult Days There were days when things weren’t going well, and the tea in the house was almost gone. One evening, the whole family only had one small bowl of rice left. Mother Lan divided the rice among her children. Minh saw his mother’s empty bowl. “Aren’t you going to eat, Mom?” Minh asked. Mother gently said: “I’ve already eaten. I’m not hungry.” But in truth, she hadn’t eaten anything. That night, after her children had fallen asleep, Mother Lan sat by the small oil lamp. Mother mended the old shirts so that the children would have new clothes to wear to school tomorrow. Outside, the wind rustled through the bamboo grove. Mother watched her children sleep and gently said: “As long as you grow up strong, all my hardships will be worth it.” The love of her children Many years passed. Minh progressed and excelled in his studies. Today, he received a scholarship to study in the city. The day Minh was preparing to leave, little Na Cu asked: “Minh, who will play with me when you leave?” Minh hugged her and said: “I’m going to school so I can help Mom and you all later. I’ll come back.” Mother Lan stood by the door, her eyes red but still smiling. Before Minh left, she gave him an old scarf. “When you miss home, keep this scarf.” Minh knew it was the scarf his mother had used for many years. He hugged his mother tightly. “I promise I’ll study hard so Mom won’t have to work so hard anymore.” A Happy Day Many years later, Minh became an engineer. An also had a stable job, and little Na became a teacher. One day, they all returned to their old house. But this time, they brought many gifts and built a new house for their mother. Mother Lan had aged, her hair much grayer. Looking at her children in front of her, she said emotionally: “You’ve grown so big…” Minh held his mother’s hand: “Mom, you’ve taken care of us all your life. Now it’s our turn to take care of you.” Little Na hugged her mother: “Mom, you’re the best person in the world.” Mother Lan looked at her children, tears rolling down her cheeks, but her smile remained as warm as ever. In the new house, the laughter of the family echoed again. And no matter how much time passes, a mother’s love for her children will always be the greatest thing in the world.
