Also known as "In the Ballroom," this touching Tchaikovsky song is here superbly sung by tenor Richard Tauber on an old Parlophone 78rpm disc dating from 1945. The English lyrics, transcribed from the 78, appear to be as follows but are open to correction!: ... The lights in the ballroom were gleaming, the couples awhirl (?) in the dance, and there I was drifting and dreaming, till you came and with you romance. You looked like a vision of glory, appeared like the sunrise appears, but what did your eyes tell, what story, a story of sadness and tears. And yet in that moment of splendour, just lost in the music of night, I felt that your eyes could look tender, oh how did I long for that sight. Now here in my lonely room, yearning, my heart keeps a lone rendezvous, the dawn finds me weary (?), burning with visions and daydreams of you. I'm resting my tired head on my pillow, why are you so far, why not here, the wind sighs outside in the willow, it sighs with me "I miss you dear."
