Many sincerely hold that salvation—justification, forgiveness, and reconciliation—comes after one believes the gospel. Yet the testimony of Scripture teaches otherwise. The Bible declares that salvation in its legal and covenantal aspects was accomplished by Christ and precedes any faith or repentance on our part. Furthermore, Scripture teaches that a sinner must first be sovereignly quickened by God—born again—before repentance and faith can exist. Faith, then, is not the cause of salvation but the gracious fruit and evidence of it. This truth humbles the sinner, magnifies Christ, and gives all glory to God alone for salvation. Justification accomplished apart from our faith Romans 5:1, 9 — “Being now justified by his blood…” Romans 4:25 — “Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.” Salvation before repentance and faith 2 Timothy 1:9 — “Who hath saved us… not according to our works…” Titus 3:5 — “Not by works of righteousness which we have done…” Sovereign quickening precedes faith John 1:12–13 — “…born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh…” Ephesians 2:1, 5 — “You hath he quickened…” John 6:63 — “It is the spirit that quickeneth…” Faith as the fruit, not the cause Philippians 1:29 — “For unto you it is given… to believe” Galatians 2:16 — “…by the faith of Jesus Christ” Hebrews 12:2 — “Jesus the author and finisher of our faith”
