“Play one in Lithuanian” my grandmother said at the funeral. And so this was the one I played. My grandfather’s passing was unexpectedly expected. Those who cared, had time to prepare. Before heading over to Colombia, I went through his portraits and put aside his best snap. I packed a fistful of Lithuanian soil. This song wasn’t part of the preparations. It prepared itself for the occasion. My grandfather first heard “Mekucijaus Mirtis” (Merkutio’s Death) the day he met my wife. She played Juliet. I played Mercutio. We all died on stage that night. He was impressed. The song was written by one of my best friend’s father - Kestutis Antanelis. He made his exit this past autumn; the song surfaced from my subconscious and has been haunting my ears ever since. When my grandmother asked me to play “one in Lithuanian” at his funeral, I didn’t think it would be a song that was so entangled in past experiences and the people who matter in my life. It captured what we were feeling perfectly. We didn’t get to record it at the funeral, and so several family members asked me to. I thought it might be worth sharing.
