Rollei, Yashica, Mamiya and others made many top-end twin lens reflex (TLR) cameras from the 1930s through the 1980s. For about 20 years in the 1940s and 1950s, Ricoh made a line of TLR cameras called the Diacords. Short for DIA-mond and ***-cord (a suffix used by other TLR makers to indicate trim level), the Diacords were inexpensive but very high-quality cameras. Diaflex may have been a better name had Ricoh kept in line with the trim level designation. With other makes, -cord cameras represented budget or mid-range TLRs. They performed well but lacked some of the features of the high-end -felx cameras. The Diacords had almost or all of the trim assets found on -flex suffix cameras made by other manufacturers, but with a much lower price. The Ricohmatic 225 was the first non-Diacord-named TLR in Ricoh's line and was made in 1959. This TLR has a complete host of features and competes in image quality with the best of the -flex cameras from its era. In fact, it compete quite will in image quality with today's professional medium-format cameras.
