A bench comprising Justice B. V. Nagarathna and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan was hearing the plea of an आरोपी accused of establishing a physical relationship with a woman on the promise of marriage and later marrying another woman. During the hearing, Justice Nagarathna remarked that caution must be exercised in pre-marital relationships. She observed that perhaps the court may sound “old-fashioned,” but questioned the basis of trust between two individuals who are not yet married and may not know each other well. According to submissions before the court, the woman met the accused in 2022 through a matrimonial website. The accused allegedly promised marriage and met her in Dubai, where they entered into a physical relationship. Later, the woman reportedly discovered that the accused was already married and had solemnized a second marriage in Punjab in January 2024. The court also questioned why the complainant agreed to travel abroad before marriage and emphasized the need for caution in such situations. The matter relates specifically to the bail plea, and the court’s remarks were made during oral observations in the course of proceedings.
