Robert Clayson, Marimba Night Groove was completed in the early months of 2020 and was born out of an improvisation I was experimenting with at the time. I was playing around with melodies in A major, but one of my mallets slipped and I accidentally hit B flat instead of B natural. I immediately knew I had something. Through research, I eventually discovered that the piece is centered on the Dominant Phrygian scale, which is essentially just a natural minor scale with a lowered second scale degree and a major third scale degree. This is the first time I have ventured into composing melodies with a specific mode in mind, and it was very refreshing to see how quickly I was able to come up with ideas. Night Groove begins sedately enough with a chorale that alternates between traditional roles and double laterals. As the chorale continues, it increases in intensity before breaking out into the piece’s eponymous groove. The groove itself is forceful and driving, and maintains its energy throughout most of the piece. It briefly settles back down into another chorale toward the end of the piece, before returning abruptly and aggressively to the groove. The final section of the piece is once again high-energy, and ends with a robust, satisfying finality. This piece is certainly more aggressive than most of the compositions I have written, and the fact that it fits perfectly in the 4.3-octave range just makes it all the better. This piece is intended for an intermediate- to advanced-level performer and is a perfect choice for juries and recital programs.
