It´s not every day that we travel and have the opportunity to sample cuisine unique to a specific country. A doughnut is a donut more often than not; however, a Picarone is uniquely Peruvian and as such doesn't translate well in English. Apparently, this Peruvian dessert (and common street food snack) originated during the colonial period. Consisting principally of squash and sweet potato dough it is typically served up in ring formation with a healthy dose of syrup. Often the syrup is either a honey or molasses which is called chancaca. We found it most similar to an airy waffle oversaturated with syrup. The key is to sop it up with as much syrup as possible. Although it comes with several rings it is actually quite a bit lighter in taste and texture than it appears to the eye. If you're wandering the streets of Lima be sure to try one - it's cheap and delicious! 🍯 Parque Kennedy Picarones Adventure – In-Order Summary Join us as we dive into one of Lima’s sweetest street-food traditions—right in the heart of Parque Kennedy! After a day of sampling local flavours, we still had room for Picarones, Peru’s irresistible take on the doughnut, drizzled in honey. Here’s exactly what happens (and what we say) in the order it appears in the video: Greeting at Parque Kennedy “Well, Hello there! So this afternoon we are at Parque Kennedy and we are here for some dessert.” The sun-dappled plaza buzzes with families, artisans—and dozens of friendly cats. Dessert Mission Declared “We’ve been eating like pigs all day long but there is still a bit of room left for something sweet, so we’re going to try Picarones.” First Glimpse of the Picarones Stall We spot the cart brimming with golden rings and syrup pots. “Let’s go eat.” Bee’s Appetite for Honey Audrey laughs: “Look at this—I already have a bee following me because of the honey. Isn’t that amazing?” Single Order Suffices “We thought about getting two orders. Haha. This will be plenty.” What Are Picarones? Samuel explains: “These are Picarones—fried doughnuts made with sweet potato and pumpkin, shaped into rings, then drenched in sweet honey syrup. Uniquely Peruvian cuisine.” First Bite Reactions Audrey digs in: “Mmmmm… these are so fresh! Fluffy and airy. Can you taste that honey?” “Oh, yeah. I sure can. I’ve already finished half of one.” Cat Cameo A curious kitty pads over. “Hi, Kitty. Hello, Mr. Meowzers,” we greet the park’s many feline residents. Naming the Dish “There isn’t an English equivalent,” Samuel notes. “I suppose we could call it a Peruvian doughnut with honey—and that’s what we’re going with.” Second First Bite (Samuel’s Turn) Sam’s debut taste: “Woo hoo! Honey syrup… oh my gosh, that is so good. It reminds me of an over-saturated waffle with maple syrup—that perfect – yet absurd – amount of sweetness.” No Half Measures “I don’t mess around when I eat food,” Audrey declares, polishing off her ring. Price Check “This tasty dessert only cost us 5 soles for five churros—about $1.75 CAD. Very affordable for so much flavour!” Chicha Pairing Suggestion “If you want a local drink, pair your picarones with Chicha Morada—purple corn juice that complements the honey.” Debate Over the Third Ring “There are five of these but only two of us. So who gets that third one?” “We split it down the middle, Sam.” More Feline Friends Dozens of cats roam Parque Kennedy. “Here’s another one—meow, meow!” They purrr at every crumb. Sweet Treat Verdict “That was a delicious sweet treat,” Samuel sighs, “and we’ll be back at this park very soon to film more street food.” Stay Tuned for More “Thanks for joining our food mission! If you loved this picarones adventure, stay tuned for more Lima eats coming your way!” 👍 Like if you’re craving Peruvian doughnuts! 💬 Comment your favourite street-food treat below. 🔔 Subscribe for weekly travel & food videos with Samuel & Audrey #LimaEats #Picarones #StreetFood #PeruvianDessert #TravelVlog #SamuelAndAudrey #ParqueKennedy #FoodMission Eating Peruvian Doughnuts (Picarones) in Lima, Peru travel video: Well, Hello there!
