Carnivalesque Urbanism | Rowell Road Back-Alley - Night

TRANSPOSING ILLEGAL, PROFANE ACTIVITIES ONTO A HIDDEN SPACE Coupled in between 2 rows of shophouses along Rowell Road, this back-alley boasts permissive activities such as prostitution and unlicenced sex shops, and is especially crowded on Sundays when Migrant Workers have their day off. People take complete ownership of these back alley spaces, creatively and illegally converting back-kitchens and unused toilets into spaces conducive & secluded enough for such activities, whilst some are remained open to allow potential customers to maintain visual contact with prostitutes inside. This series of videos are part of a study of existing Carnivalesque scenarios within the urban context of Singapore, where creative spatial ownership & reinterpretation of public space is inherent. This thesis serves to introduce Carnivalesque participation & collaboration in the establishment of public space, which can then be creatively reinterpreted, reimagined & reproduced in an excitingly chaotic yet controlled manner.
