Today’s photo captures a memorable day in Clemson football history. Most Clemson fans know the history and lore surrounding Clemson’s orange pants, which first appeared in 1980. But Clemson’s first truly mystical change in football attire actually came 13 years earlier—when the Tigers took the field wearing orange shoes against NC State. On November 18, 1967, the 10th-ranked Wolfpack arrived in Death Valley to face a 4–4 Clemson squad. NC State had its sights set on the Sugar Bowl, but Clemson had other plans. Prior to the game, the Tigers painted their shoes orange as a motivational spark. Students were invited onto the field to form a tunnel for the team as the Tigers ran down the Hill. When Clemson burst onto the field wearing their bright orange shoes, a wave of electricity surged through the fired-up crowd. Clemson fed off that energy. Buddy Gore led the way, rushing for two touchdowns as the Tigers stunned NC State 14–6 and knocked the Wolfpack out of Sugar Bowl contention. Trivia Question Most Clemson fans remember Buddy Gore for his great running ability. But in this game he recorded a statistic that he achieved only once during his Clemson career.
