Here in the UK Held is perhaps the least well known and understood of all the major European, motorcycle clothing brands. And we don't really know why that is. They're the market leader in the largest market in Europe: Germany. And indeed they're very well known throughout the continent, where it's widely recognised that they're one of the most technical companies in the field. But for an overseas brand to make its mark in the UK it really has to work through a distributor. This has become particularly important since Brexit, which has made importing into the UK a lot more complicated, and much slower. The better known brands like Arai, Richa, Rukka, Halvarssons, Daytona, Dainese and Alpinestars all work with distributors who hold large amounts of stock here in their UK-based warehouses for overnight delivery to retailers. Held hasn't taken this route; and that may be because when you work with a distributor you lose a certain amount of control over your brand. And Held, we suspect, has always wanted to be in charge of who markets its wares and how. But with that decision comes a certain lack of visibility. As a result, one doesn't see Held in lots of shops. And that's a shame because they make some truly outstanding gear. Not that any of this is an issue for us. We quite like the fact that you can't find Held everywhere. And what we see is that those dealers who do offer it tend to understand what Held is about, and to treat it with a degree of respect. The company goes back a long way. It was founded in 1946 by Bruno Held and his son Edgar. Refugees from Eastern Europe, both were skilled glove makers. After the war they settled in Burgberg in Bavaria, where the company is still based today. Initially, they concentrated on ladies' gloves. But over time they moved in to driving gloves and inevitably into gloves for those post-war daredevils who raced around the country on their large capacity BMW motorcycles. In the seventies, they started to gain a reputation for the quality of their riding gloves; and indeed for the level of protection they provided. By the end of that decade they were working closely with a number of well-known motocross riders who, back then of course, were often more famous than their road-riding counterparts. But it was working with Germany’s most famous Grand Prix rider, Tony Mang, in the early eighties that really put Held on the map, and brought the company to the attention of a worldwide audience. In 1991, they produced their first textile suit. A few years later they unveiled one of the very first all-kangaroo racing suits. Natural progression saw them producing waterproof gear in the early years of the new millenium. Inevitably, that saw them eventually develop a relationship with Gore. Some brands have grown faster and flown higher, but then again some of those have caught too much sun and come tumbling down to earth. Held's path has been steadier and more measured. Today the brand is still family owned. They continue to create the kind of high-quality clothing that has earned the quiet respect and trust of motorcyclists all around the world. Yet, even now, Held is still best known for its gloves. They make some of the best on the market. And indeed make gloves for a number of brands who you might have thought made their own. Every brand will say this, but Held really does only use the best components and the most advanced technologies. And they work with the finest leathers, be that bovine leather, goatskin, deerskin, kangaroo, alligator or crocodile. They are also the only motorcycle glove maker that we've come across that offers short- and long-fingered variants, albeit not for every model in their collection. But here’s the thing, even though I’ve been involved with Held for a few years now, I still get confused by their range. I don’t know why. It might be because a lot of their gloves look quite similar. Maybe it’s because their gloves don’t always fit into the accepted categories. Or it could that there are just so darned many of them. Whatever the reason, because I get so confused I often don’t head towards a Held glove in the shop when I’m trying to help a customer. So what I am hoping is that this run through the range will help people get to know the Held range better. Me being one of those people. Anyway, here goes. But one last thing, I’ve now been told that Held doesn’t actually do alligator or crocodile gloves. I don’t know why, though, because I’d love a pair!
