Day 4: Valbone – Theth, 12 km via Valbone Pass (1795 m) Today’s stage takes us across the legendary Valbone Pass, the classic route connecting the valleys of Valbone and Theth in the Albanian Alps. The ascent from Valbone is spectacular - a steep but rewarding climb that opens up breathtaking views over the Valbone Valley. Near the pass, many hikers pause for a break or climb a nearby peak, a popular spot for photos. From the ridge, the panorama stretches on both sides, though the highest peak of Albania often hides in the clouds. Crossing the pass feels special: this is perhaps the most popular hiking trail in the entire country, and the steady flow of trekkers - ascending and descending - is proof of its fame. Sometimes, the path even slows into small “traffic jams” of hikers. As we descend toward Theth, the scenery changes. The trail winds mostly through forests, offering fewer open views, but the charm of the alpine landscape remains. Along the way, we pass a small mountain café where hikers take shelter from passing rain showers and enjoy a cold beer. Since there is no road between the two valleys, pack horses carry luggage daily across the pass - our bags too travel on horseback, somewhere behind us on the trail. Finally, after hours of descent, we reach Theth - back to “civilization.” Taxi drivers offer rides, but our hotel is only a few hundred meters away.
