Pingtung County Main Library: A Forest-Themed Icon of Reading The Pingtung County Main Library spans nearly 5 hectares and is Taiwan's only forest-themed library. Preserving a 50-year-old camphor forest, it serves as a cultural memory for Pingtung residents. Its redesign balances the preservation of historical architecture with modern operational enhancements, breaking stereotypes and integrating Pingtung's rich cultural heritage into every space. The library stands as a landmark for promoting the “Read Pingtung” initiative. Introduction Located in Millennium Park, the original Zhongzheng Library was completed in 1983 and opened in 1984. After more than 30 years, its design became outdated, with inefficient spatial planning, inadequate facilities, and aging infrastructure. Recognizing these issues, the Pingtung County Government initiated a transformation, closing the library in November 2017. Construction began in May 2018, and after two years of work, the library reopened on August 28, 2020, as the Pingtung County Main Library. The Pingtung County Main Library has elevated its architectural depth and public value through a thoughtful blend of preservation and renovation. By reestablishing the library’s organic connection to the city and local memory, it has transformed into a public space intimately linked to the daily lives of its residents. Since 2021, the library has received numerous accolades, including the Landscape Award of Pingtung County Public Building, the Taiwan Lighting Environment Award, the Taiwan Architecture Award, the Golden Pin Design Award, the prestigious iF Design Award from Germany, the Architizer A+ Awards from the U.S., and the National Excellent Construction Award for Comprehensive Excellence, accumulating a total of 13 major awards. This library aspires to offer barrier-free knowledge, an inclusive space for all ages, and a building harmoniously integrated with nature. It preserves the collective memory of Pingtung’s people while fostering new possibilities for the city through diverse activities and collections. The Pingtung County Main Library stands as a symbol of imagination and progress, inspiring a vibrant and innovative future.
