This technical demo highlights the upscale and restoration work I prepared for a theatrical screening of Tremors: The Series at Tremors Fest 2 (2024) in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Please watch in HD to get the full effect. To prepare the legacy SD digital assets for a cinema environment, I built a custom restoration pipeline focused on creating a natural, comfortable viewing experience, rather than the overly sharpened, artificial look often produced by fully automated AI upscaling. My approach to restoration (and AI in general) is simple: use modern tools to support original work, not to overpower or replace it. The process involved generating multiple upscaling passes with different upscale models in Topaz Video AI, each selected for what it handled best. I then manually composited the strongest elements from each pass in Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects, performing detailed retouching to maximize clarity and color while retaining as much of the original “film texture” as possible. Additional audio and visual cleanup was handled in Adobe Audition and Photoshop, addressing artifacts that required some extra care. The restored episodes were screened theatrically for festival attendees and Stampede Entertainment stakeholders, where the work was experienced as intended on the big screen. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with audiences engaging comfortably with the material and stakeholders expressing enthusiasm for how the series translated to a cinematic setting without losing its original character.
