In 1829, Francis Danby was one of Britain's most celebrated artists. By 1830, he had lost his wife to another painter, lost the Royal Academy election by a single vote to John Constable, and fled England in disgrace. For the next decade, he lived as an exile in Switzerland, building boats on Lake Geneva and painting almost nothing. Then he came back. And he painted The Deluge. This is the story of how a forgotten Irish-British artist turned personal catastrophe into one of the most terrifying paintings of the 19th century. Standing nearly 15 feet wide at Tate Britain in London, The Deluge shows the moment humanity realizes it cannot survive the biblical flood. Dozens of figures cling to a black rock as waters rise around them. A blood-red sun bleeds through apocalyptic clouds. And in the corner, a glowing angel weeps over what appears to be a drowned giant. Francis Danby painted The Deluge as a comeback, as revenge against everyone who had dismissed him. He painted the end of the world because his own world had already ended once. This video examines the painting in detail, explores the devastating personal story behind its creation, and asks why this masterpiece remains so unknown while artists like John Martin and Turner receive constant attention. Two days before Danby died, he learned that the man who stole his wife had been elected to the Royal Academy. Sometimes the flood does not kill you. Sometimes you survive and paint it.
