Because private military contractors hired unqualified translators for intelligence gathering and interrogations, many innocent people (mothers, taxi drivers, pizza delivery drivers) were taken to Abu Ghraib and tortured for no reason at all. These companies were receiving contracts for BILLIONS of dollars, but would put no effort into vetting or training their employees -they’d hire as many people as they could, as quickly as possible so they could fulfill their contracts. They put lives on the line and damaged America’s reputation abroad for their own private profit. Interrogators would tie 7 or 8 other men together this way, then push one -causing the whole chain would fall. They’d urinate on them, put weapons on their private parts, and inject them with chemicals that would render them unable to have children. These were INNOCENT people. Meanwhile, CACI’s CEO was bringing home over $22 million per year -even though there was no oversight of their operations. Because private contractors weren’t bound by military law, there was a “Wink & Nod” approach to interrogations. The companies (CACI & Titan -the latter now known as L-3 Services) would simply turn a blind eye, so they could have plausible deniability and avoid prosecution. The ONLY two people to be punished for this widespread abuse are two individual soldiers that carried out the orders. No one at the top has been sent to prison for their negligence and profiteering. The worst thing that could happen to a contractor would be simply sent home -only to return the following week, working for a different company.
