Science Fiction vs. Fantasy - What's the difference? | The Bookworm

Today I'll attempt you differentiate between two literary genres: Fantasy and Science Fiction (in short: sci-fi). Aren't you getting tired of going into a bookshop and see a shelf labeled "fantasy and science fiction", as if there is no difference (or they simply aren't important enough to get each a shelf)??? I will be basing this video on the theory of Fictional Worlds by Thomas Pavel. I learned about Pavel in university, as I was doing my BA in English, and I was immediately drawn to this theory. Basically, Pavel claims that each work of fiction creates a fictional world in which said story takes place. As we examine this fictional world, it its relation to our real world which determines whether the work is science fiction, fantasy or none of them. We'll be looking at Pavel's three fictional world: Possible (works that take place in the possible world are neither fantasy nor science fiction), impossible (fantasy) and improbable (sci-fi).
