In our previous session we have learnt that what our sense do? In the present session let us learn the path of receiving a stimulus to express a response or sensation. The conditions or substances triggers the process of sensation is called as stimulants. The information carried by the stimulants is received by certain organs called as receptors which are present in the sense organs. The information carried by the stimulants is converted into nerve signals. These nerve signals are carried to the brain and are processed to situation. For example: When reflected light (stimulus) from the surface of a green leaf reaches receptors in our eyes and are converted into nerve signals. These signals reach the brain and are interpreted as green coloured shape against a background which we see as leaf. Brain is the centre for all sensitive activities and has two types of nerves, such as Sensory nerves and Motor nerves. Sensory nerves receive information in the form of nerve signals from sense organs. Motor nerves interpret the signals and send the information in the form of response. For example: When we see a mosquito biting us, the sensory nerves sends information to the brain and where the information interprets and responds through the motor nerves in the form of action as hands to strike and kill it. LOOKING BACK IN HISTORY In our present session, let us learn some interesting aspects of consideration of senses in the history. In Ancient times nearly 2300 years ago, for the first time the scientists Plato and Aristotle mentioned five senses of human beings. The sense of touch is considered as the most important among them, which includes in sensation of pressure, vibration, heat, cold and texture. Around 1220 AD, a bishop in the church named Albertus Magnus who follow the ideas of Aristotelian has mentioned about the role of nerves in sensation of touch of the body for the first time. In the year 1600 AD, the scientist named Johannes kepler who made his contributions in astronomy regarding the rotation and revolution of earth has mentioned the role of eye as one of the sense organs. In recent years, scientists revealed how our senses work. It has explained how the electrochemical basis of transmission of nerve signals and functions of specific areas in the brain are involved in sensations. In Aristotelian era, the number of senses is considered as five, while in the modern era the number signifies the sense organs in our body. Even though, the number of senses is classified as five, we may have many more senses.
