Setting the Table for a Formal Dinner 1. Place the placemat on the table. In front of each of the seats you've set up for your visitors, place a placemat. You should have enough matching placemats for all of the guests for a genuine formal dining setting, and the placemats should also match the tablecloth. 2. Place the napkin on the placemat's left side. Depending on the napkin, fold it in half or quarters. Ideally, the napkin should be made of fabric. You may also fold your napkin to the left of the forks once they've been placed on the table. 3. Middle the plate on the placemat's center. Only the right side of the napkin should be covered. Consider how a right-handed person would use a fork and knife to chop something if you mix up where the forks and knives should go. If you sit down and imitate the move, you'll see that you take up the fork with your left hand and the knife with your right, indicating that each instrument should be placed accordingly.
