The Sunken Road

Ranger Brian takes us for a battle walk at Antietam National Battlefield Park exploring the events that led to the extensive fighting at the Sunken Road, now referred to as The Bloody Lane. First learning how the action became isolated from the end of the line at the West Woods and how the rolling hills made contact between the Union troops all but impossible. We then walk in a large loop encompassing both the confederate side at Piper Farm and orchard, and then the route of the Union forces, including Caldwell position, and the route of the Irish Brigade as they climbed the slope towards this bloody engagement. Brian concludes with descriptions of the bravery of the individual soldiers, and the confusion on the Confederate side that forced the fall back from the road and the end of the fighting in the area of the battlefield.
