A protest in Athens marking the second anniversary of Greece’s worst-ever train disaster escalated into violence on Friday, February 28, as demonstrators clashed with police near the Greek Parliament.Tens of thousands of demonstrators had gathered at Syntagma Square to demand justice over the Tempi train disaster, which occurred on February 28, 2023. According to Greek daily Ekathimerini, tensions flared when a group of unidentified individuals hurled petrol bombs at a large unit of riot police stationed in the yard of Parliament. “The hooded assailants pushed through protesters to attack police, who responded with tear gas. The clash, initially limited to one corner of Syntagma Square, spread within minutes to the surrounding streets as petrol bombs landed on Vasilissis Sofias Avenue and other nearby roads,” the report stated. The collision between a passenger train and a freight train near the town of Tempi in northern Greece claimed the lives of 57 people, including many university students and nine train crew members. Protesters expressed their frustration over what they perceive as a lack of accountability and delayed legal proceedings in the case. The demonstrations were accompanied by a nationwide strike that severely disrupted daily life across Greece. Workers in multiple sectors halted operations, grounding flights, stopping sea and ground transport, and forcing businesses to close.
