Cassandra Brown could tell something wasn’t right, “I was almost like a teenager again. Started having like a menstrual cycle.” She met with OB/GYN Dr. Evan Theoharis. After ordering tests, “He said there was a possible cancer. And I was just like, what? That was never a thought on my mind that it would be cancer.” Brown decided to get a hysterectomy to eliminate any possible cancer risk. Dr. Theoharis preformed it using the DaVinci surgical robot. “It was four small incisions, really small, a little over an inch,” said Brown. “It's really not your mother's hysterectomy anymore. Traditionally, large incisions, long hospitalizations would keep women down for several weeks, where now the majority of our minimally invasive procedures for hysterectomies are now outpatient surgery with recovery measured in days rather than weeks,” said Dr. Theoharis. Brown was able to avoid a hospital stay and recover at home. “The fact that I was able to do it that early and go home and be in my own bed, have my own food. So that was, that was pretty good,” said Brown. “The soreness, that was pretty much it. No real bad side effects…Considering what I had, that’s pretty good” You can learn more by searching for Robotic Hysterectomy on leehealth.org.
