"My Garden and My Studio" Bernard Trainor is a landscape designer and multidisciplinary artist living on the Central Coast of California. He was raised on the Mornington Peninsula along Australia’s rugged Southeastern Coast near the city of Melbourne which shares essentially Mediterranean characteristics, geographical and botanical parallels with the place where he now lives and creates. After studying horticulture and garden design in Melbourne he won a scholarship to further his education in England - attending the English Gardening School before heading to California in 2002. He is the founder and creative director of Ground Studio, a landscape architecture practice with studios in Monterey, Santa Barbara, and Napa, and is one of America's most celebrated and masterful landscape designers. In his private garden studio, Trainor says "My entire creative life revolves around the place where I live and work - whether it be architectural design, painting in my art studio, furniture design, sculpture/installation, and most importantly gardening every day. This is where I have my hands in the soil, or covered in ink and paint. This is my 'laboratory' where I feel most comfortable, at the-intersection of art, design, and science." He talks about the research and experimentation in his own garden that in turn influences the designs at Ground Studio which begin with a profound observation of the land and are driven by the desire to reveal the essence of every place.
