In October of 2024, I attended my first Mr. Olympia competition, and spent the entire week leading up to the show attending the week's festivities and meeting up with some pros and legends. Despite all of the exciting events, and busy week, the event I looked forward to the most was the Mr. Olympia press conference. The Mr. Olympia press conference has been a staple in the IFBB for the better part of 20 years, highlighted by some of the most intense and entertaining moments in bodybuilding history. So this press conference may have set the stage for yet another iconic moment in bodybuilding history. Sure enough, it ended up happening when Samson Dauda took his shirt off and gave the fans a show. However, I couldn't help but notice Derek Lunsford. Specifically...Derek's reaction. He was fixated and locked in on Samson while the rest of the open guys avoided looking at him. I couldn't pinpoint exactly what Derek was feeling in that moment, until the prejudging came and Samson was vastly improved. That was when it hit me that Derek knew how impressive Samson was going to be, and that showing along with his subsequent victory may very well mark the beginning of the next dominant run in open bodybuilding. And the sport may never be the same again....
