LEBANON: IRISH PEACEKEEPER INJURED IN MORTAR ATTACK

(14 Jul 1998) Natural Sound An Irish peacekeeper and a Lebanese civilian were wounded on Tuesday when mortar shells fired from an Israeli position in southern Lebanon landed on a village. Israeli war planes also launched an air attack on guerrilla positions in the hills and valleys of Iqlim al-Tuffah, a guerrilla stronghold that faces the Israeli-occupied border enclave. Israeli planes fired four air-to-ground missiles in the attack on the hills of Iqlim al-Tuffah. Iqlim al-Tuffah is a frequent target for Israeli warplanes, is said to be used extensively by the Iranian-backed Hezbollah guerrilla group. Israel says it serves as an effective base from which to stage attacks against Israeli troops and their allied militiamen in the occupied zone. A 60-year-old Lebanese civilian who was passing near the Irish position was also hit and taken to a hospital in Sidon, the main town in southern Lebanon It is believed that UNIFIL has started an investigation into the incident.
