University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra N ew Music Concert 2021 Pieces Written, Performed, and Conducted by Students Recorded Wednesday, February 10, 2021 Hill Auditorium Moses in Nederland (World Premiere) Michael Kropf (DMA '22) Leonard Bopp (MM '21), conductor Composer's note – Moses in Nederland is taken from an in-progress violin concerto that serves as a reflection on the life of my great-grandfather Moses Schenkein. Moses was, among other things, an amateur violinist and composer, a European Jew, and a devoted father who led his family through a treacherous journey through Europe to escape the Holocaust. During the course of the coronavirus pandemic, I have found myself sifting through an old folder of manuscripts left behind by Moses, filled with a number of melodies that he composed during the 1930s, while he was living in the Hague. These melodies range from somber and longing settings of the Zionist poetry of Hayim Bialik, including one titled “They Shall Not Crush Us,” to light-hearted tangos, including one titled “Hollandia.” This movement of the concerto is inspired by an imagined version of my great-grandfather having recently immigrated to Holland from Warsaw, where he was born. The movement seeks to capture the excitement and discovery that can come with moving to a new city. Moses certainly viewed Holland as his home, and following the war, he actually returned to the Hague, living there for the rest of his life.
