Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe did not deliver an official apology for Japan’s wartime atrocities in his address at the U.S. Congress Wednesday in Washington D.C., despite voices from various circles urging him to do so. In his one-hour address, Abe said Japan felt “deep remorse” for its war of aggression against neighboring countries, however, words such as apology, introspection were not used in his address. “Pearl Harbor, Bataan Corregidor, Coral Sea, the battles engraved at the memorial crossed my mind, and I reflected upon the lost dreams and lost future of those young Americans. History is harsh. What is done can’t be undone,” said Abe. The Japanese Prime Minister also did not mention the word "comfort women" -- the women who were forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese Army during the wartime. “Armed conflicts have always made women suffer the most. In our age, we must realize the kind of world where finally women are free from human rights abuses,” he said. Abe said Japan supports U.S. Asian-Pacific rebalancing strategy, and will offer 2.8 billion U.S. dollar aid for U.S. force to improve its military base in Guam. Protesters from Asian countries protested outside the Capitol Hill, saying that Abe’s attitude towards Japan's war history is unacceptable. “Can you reverse history? You can’t change the history. History is history. We urge Abe to apologize to all the wartime victims in the Asian countries, as well as to the American people for their Pearl Harbor attack, and admit all the war crimes committed by its wartime militarists,” said Wu Yusheng, a Chinese protester. Abe’s stressing of tighter U.S.-Japan security ties in the address and the recent unveil of an expanded U.S.-Japan defense guidelines in the Asian-Pacific region that included China’s Diaoyu Islands into its defense area have angered the Chinese communities in the United States. “The Diaoyu Islands issue can’t be decided only by the U.S. and Japan. The Diaoyu Islands are China’s inherent territory. All Chinese descendants living across the world, the Chinese government and people of Taiwan should be united to defend our sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands,” said Zhu Lichuang, member of DYT Research Fund, a New York-based organization with the Diaoyu Islands issue as its main research area.
