Their second album, "A Flower Most Evil", had imploded before release, its master tapes violently bisected by bassist Renny Fuzz in what was later described as a “symbolic gesture gone literal.” But not everything from those sessions was lost. Some of those songs, damaged but not forgotten, would resurface—rewired and reimagined—under the influence of one woman: Karen Bishop. A psychology major expelled from an Ivy League university under mysterious circumstances, Karen spent her days haunting the campus of San Diego University, petitioning courses in Comparative Literary and Cultural Studies and post-doc programs on Victorian Aestheticism and Decadence. At night, she was the resident provocateur of a coffee shop called The Grind—a legal front for pastries, espresso and an open mic; in the back, a less-than-legal gateway to recreational imports from just south of the border. Karen’s signature piece? id Echo Chamber #3: a one-woman therapy session in which she played both doctor and patient, whipping herself (and the audience) into a frenzy with a leather riding crop, while intentionally misquoting Freud and Baudelaire, to the confusion of everyone except herself. It was here she met Renny Fuzz, the Apostrophes' erratic bassist, and fell headfirst into the band’s swirling orbit. Ironically, The Apostrophes had already been unintentionally misquoting Freud and Baudelaire in their lyrics—Karen simply gave it form, shape, and a little more voltage. To repay a debt owed by lead singer Lionel Kratz to Grind owner and minor underworld figure Luis DeMatris, the Apostrophes became the venue's first—and only—house band. Their tenure was brief, loud, and punctuated by Karen occasionally hijacking the mic during instrumentals, whispering fractured monologues about repression, red wine, and ruin. Though their romantic entanglements were volatile (“toxic at best,” as Karen would later write in her tell-all autobiography), her role in the group quickly transformed into that of spiritual architect. Or, as drummer Toby Raskin put it: “I don’t know about spiritual guide. But she always carried the good s@#$. And honestly, she had more musical and business sense than the rest of us combined. At one point she just stepped up to the mic and filled in all the gaps.” Under her direction, fragments from "A Flower Most Evil" were retrieved and transformed—lyrics altered, arrangements deconstructed, spoken passages layered in like psychological debris. What began as salvage became evolution. The result was "Condemned Ecstasy" —an album initially dismissed as “elitist and pretentious fuzz,” but now heard, in hindsight, as THE major turning point in the band’s sound.
