In this video I share a tip I utilized in a recent concrete patio build project to better ensure my concrete control joints would work as designed. Concrete surface control joints are often made with a concrete grooving tool shortly after concrete is poured. The problem is sometimes the grooving tool does not make a deep enough groove in the concrete floor surface to serve as a reliable breaking point. My solution is to address the problem before the concrete is poured by placing a structure underneath the area where the grooving tool will be used. The idea is to thin the concrete even further under the control joint made by the grooving tool. In my demonstration I use HardiePlank boards to create the additional concrete void underneath the area where the concrete groove tool will be used. The purpose of a control joint in a concrete surface is to create an breaking point in the concrete where the break is minimized or even completely hidden by the control joint. The point is concrete slabs are likely to have stress forces applied to them that will cause cracking. A proper control joint creates a weak spot in the concrete which encourages a crack to happen there, where it will not be noticeable.
