As I think more about MARY RODGERS' passing today I think of how deeply intelligent, sardonic, quick, sassy, salty and outspoken she was. I really, really loved spending time with her. She loved to dish, but most of all she did not bullshit. She seemed incapable of kissing ass. I am attaching this chapter about WEST SIDE STORY from my first Broadway film, BROADWAY: THE GOLDEN AGE, because Mary shows up in the brief, 3-minute chapter twice - and both times is rivetingly honest, even self-deprecatingly so. And the chapter is full of Hal Prince and Steve Sondheim as well - who were her friends for the last 60 years - and Arthur Laurents, who was . . . not so much. But, that is another story - one Mary readily told at the drop of a hat. But, more importantly, besides being such a great friend to me and to our trilogy, she was a documentarian's dream - someone that tells the truth ALL OF THE TIME. And that is much rarer than I ever realized. I feel very lucky and grateful to have known you Mary.
