Description: We are living in an era where the line between the physical and digital is becoming increasingly blurred. From virtual sports arenas to immersive medical training, Extended Reality (XR) (including virtual, augmented and mixed reality) is no longer just a futuristic concept. It is already influencing how we think, move and make critical decisions. But what does this mean for the choices we make now and the legacy we leave for the future? In this talk, Prof. Habib Noorbhai draws from his research at MIT and global collaborations in sports science and health technology to explore how XR environments are reshaping the micro-moments of human decision-making. Whether it’s a batter reacting to a virtual delivery in cricket, a surgeon training in an immersive theatre or a person overcoming anxiety or fear through a VR headset, we understand the extent to which milliseconds matter. These seemingly fleeting decisions echo far beyond the moment; they train our instincts, bias our cognition and influence real-world outcomes. But the implications go deeper. As we increasingly rely on XR to train minds and bodies, who decides the rules of these virtual worlds? How do we ensure that these environments are ethical and inclusive? And how might our immersion in synthetic spaces shape the human brain and behaviour for generations to come? Blending cutting-edge research, lived experience and compelling stories; this talk will challenge assumptions, spark dialogue and offer a bold vision for how we can shape technology that doesn’t just simulate reality, but elevates humanity.
