The Contempt Of A Son | Devotional | Proverbs

If one curses his father or his mother, his lamp will be put out in utter darkness. — Proverbs 20:20 Son, this one is for you today. I don't know if you know it or not, but there was a provision in the Old Testament Law for killing a child who cursed a parent. Don't believe me? Then you should check out Exodus 21:17 or Leviticus 20:9. They pretty much say the same thing but state: Whoever curses his father or his mother shall be put to death. But here's the catch. Every man listening today, not just you, has been a son. We all know what's it like to be in your shoes. Whether we had a father or mother present in our life, we have all had some moments we did not like our parents. And let's be honest, there are days you will not like me, and there are days I will not like you. But get this. We don't find a lot of Old Testament occurrences where a parent actually killed a child who cursed them as justified by this law. I believe that's because while parents knew they might have the right to do it, they couldn't bring themselves to do it because their love reached beyond the sinful action of their children. This is why a parent will love a disobedient, belligerent, and wayward child. Their love is so great that it's greater than the sin a child may commit even to them. So remember this. Regardless of how much you hate us on some days, your mom and I love you more. None of your private "cursing" will ever be enough for me to hate you. Now you might need to move out. But this does not mean I hate you. My love extends beyond anything you will ever do to me. One additional thought. You need to keep in mind you and I are both sons. Not just natural sons from a biological father. But spiritual sons of a spiritual Father. And while I love you a lot, you need to know God loves you way more. So much more than even I do. So much more, he did give his Son, Jesus, for you. He allowed him to be killed, even when he did not deserve it so that you and I could be called sons of the living God. And son, I want you to love me. But I want you to love God more. ASK THIS: How's your relationship with your Dad? Is there something you need to confess? DO THIS: If you are holding onto contempt, lay it down. PRAY THIS: Father, thank you for loving me. Your wayward son. PLAY THIS: The Father's Heart.
