THE MACHINE STOPS by E. M. Forster

Anticipating the internet, this 1909 story follows the interactions of a mother and her son—the former believing religiously in The Machine, and the latter following his instincts toward The Outside. Written in 1909, this story was originally published in that year's Michaelmas issue of The Oxford and Cambridge Review. Re-published far too many times to list here, but some anthologies include: The Science Fiction Galaxy in 1950, The Treasury of Science Fiction Classics in 1954, Of Men and Machines in 1963, The Cracked Looking Glass: Stories of Other Realities in 1971, and Fairy Tales for Computers in 1978. Collections of the author's tales include: The Eternal Moment and Other Stories in 1928, The Collected Tales of E. M. Forster in 1947, and The Machine Stops and Other Stories in 1997. The story was adapted to film, in what is among the surviving episodes of a British science fiction series called Out of the Unknown in 1966. Read by Darrell T.
