In this video I build a 3U server for my home. I haven't built a computer in over 20-years so this was a huge undertaking and learning experience for me. In the video, you'll see me buying the right parts, buying the wrong parts, getting unlucky with broken components, accidentally breaking some things, and failing to fit everything into the case that I bought. HOWEVER! I do manage to fix EVERYTHING and get it all working after A LOT of work. A huge thanks to my friend Rob for helping me with building the system (the second time around) and general advice about components. The server has now been running flawlessly for months, with rock-solid reliability and no downtime. I hope you enjoy the video! Notes: After this video, I added some more RAM for a total of 64GB. Temperatures of drives and CPU vary between 30ºC and 50ºC depending on how much the system is being pushed - it's very cool and quiet. The 8 x 8TB drives give me 41.26TB of usable space when using RAIDZ2. I'm running TrueNAS Scale for the OS. I'm running some apps, installed via TrueCharts, and one VM. The VM is used for Home Assistant. I did end up getting a proper enclosure for my 3D printer. ============================================= Chapters ============================================= 00:00:00 Intro 00:03:09 Parts List 00:10:27 Start of Build 00:31:52 First Attempt at Power On 00:35:56 New Motherboard, New CPU Cooler 00:41:58 Modifying HDD Caddies 00:42:06 New RAM and SFP+ Card 00:43:48 Second Attempt at Power On 00:45:02 Success! 00:45:52 3D Printing New HDD Caddies 00:52:51 Major Surgery 00:58:19 Improved Cooling 01:01:08 Moving to the Rack ============================================= Other videos mentioned in this video: ============================================= My Home Network Build Video: • Installing a Network Rack and CAT6 Cabling...
