Legend has it that the name Goðafoss (waterfall of the gods) derives from the act of the lawspeaker Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði when he threw pagan idols of the Norse gods into the waterfall when Christianity was made the official religion of Iceland in the year 999 or 1000. And although the origin of the waterfall's name is not completely clear as for the adoption of Christianity, it is preserved in Ari Þorgilsson's Íslendingabók, (book of Icelanders) however, with no mention of Þorgeir throwing his idols into Goðafoss so the legend could be a fabrication. Goðafoss is 30m wide and the water drop is 12m. The municipality Þingeyjarsveit has done a wonderful job with new carparks and trails for tourists on either side of the waterfall which increases safety and creates a pleasant experience. And although Goðafoss isn't very large, it's pleasant for the eye and a good photography subject that offers quite many angles. I like it best when it's frozen like this time. The old bridge over the river Skjálfandafljót where i start and end the video was first built in1883 and rebuilt in 1930 but only used as a pedestrian bridge since the new bridge was built in 1972. That bridge has become obsolete a long time ago because it only has one lane and plans for a new and modern bridge have already been presented as part of a plan to replace all single lane bridges on highway one in Iceland. Icelanders are however a small nation on a large island with a long highway network, so once again we remind you that consideration and patience is often needed around popular tourist spots. For travellers who are driving the official Arctic Coast Way from Akureyri, you have to make a small detour that can be corrected by continuing highway number 1 over the river by the waterfall and over the mountain to road 845, which is a less used and beautiful route to Húsavík.
