📍 Location & Approach: -Nimda Dongar is an offbeat hill trail tucked behind Matheran, in the Sahyadri foothills of Maharashtra. -The base village is Waghachi Wadi, located near Dodhani village, Panvel region. -It’s easily reachable by road from Mumbai or Panvel – either by private vehicle or ST Bus. -Start your trek early morning to enjoy the cool weather, soft golden light, and enough time to complete the loop comfortably. 🥾 Trail Overview: This is a beautiful loop trail that begins at Waghachi Wadi, ascends to the Nimda Dongar plateau, and then descends through Vaje Khind and Mhatari Khind, looping back to the base village. Total Distance: The trail is typically ~12 km, but we ended up doing 15.2 km because we lost our way at a couple of points. Total Elevation gain: ~630 m (~2067 ft) Time required: Around 8 to 9 hours for the full loop (including breaks and exploration) Difficulty: Moderate (Not ideal for beginners or those with low endurance. Suitable for regular trekkers who enjoy longer trails with scenic variety) 🌿 Terrain & Highlights: The trail offers a perfect mix of adventure and serenity. -Expect sections with Steep Ridge climbing, narrow trails with tall grass, shaded forest paths, and lush green valleys post-monsoon. -As you reach the plateau top, the breeze greets you with vast panoramic views — the Matheran range, Gadeshwar Lake, Morbe Dam, and the mighty Sahyadris stretching endlessly on the horizon. -The loop route keeps things exciting, taking you down slender, slightly slippery descents through Vaje Khind and Mhatari Khind, where the forest offers shade, yet the heavy October humidity slowly drains your energy with every step. -There are few short climbs while looping back through the forest section towards Waghachi Wadi. ⚠️ Things to Note: The trail is less trodden and not marked clearly, so hiring a local guide is strongly recommended. Mobile network coverage is patchy in most parts of the trail. Start early to return before dark. Avoid trekking during heavy rains; post-monsoon (October–December) is the best season, with pleasant weather, and clear views. Please note that once the grass dries up, it becomes very slippery and can be dangerous on steep ridge sections. 🎒 What to Carry: Minimum 3 litres of water (It’s quite humid, and there are no water sources at the top. The only place you can refill your bottle is after you descend into the forest, where you’ll find a waterfall or small water streams.) Packed lunch & snacks Trekking shoes with good grip Hat, sunscreen, long sleeves and sunglasses Torch / headlamp (as backup) Small first-aid kit & mosquito repellent Power bank & fully charged mobile ✨ Why we Loved this Trek: If you enjoy discovering hidden trails, raw landscapes, and places untouched by crowds — Nimda Dongar is a perfect pick. It’s one of those “we didn’t know this trek existed!” experiences — a full-day adventure with beautiful views, forest charm, and peaceful surroundings. ❤ Importantly, we had the wonderful company of Roshan, who initiated this trek, along with Lavita, Shalet, and Amit. They were incredible throughout the journey, even when we lost the trail, faced humidity, and had limited water.
