Although the image is that of the LP, this is a remastering of what was Side One of ALL THINGS MUST PASS using the 1987 release on 2 compact discs. This is a trial run of the album, so no soundcheck. What was important (to me) was highlighting that the wall of sound is truly meant to be a cathedral of sound. A temple. The album's production is made up of multiple layers of vocals and instrumentation. It is truly epic, and surpasses anything on "Abbey Road" released the year before. If there's anything difficult in these songs to pin down, it's the Bass Guitar work. There's not a significant amount of definition to its tones, so it gets a little lost at certain points, and then alarmingly found again elsewhere. This album would truly take time to do properly. All Things Must Pass should also be done in 5.1 Surround Sound, to get an idea of what that cathedral/temple sounds like. Complaints over the years about the "wall of sound" I think are just go to's from fans/critics without actually listening to the thing. It's a dense record, but everything is recorded impeccably (by Ken Scott/Phil MacDonald, two of the best engineers Apple ever possessed), it's just a very layered approach to recording/mixing. Compacting it into a 2 track stereo image doesn't quite do it justice. It doesn't have enough room to breathe. Considering Harrison wrote Isn't It A Pity back in 1966, I consider "Hey Jude" merely a demo of it. "Pity" is how you make 7 minutes epic.
