Interactive web graphics are a popular and convenient medium for conveying information. However, web graphics are rarely used during the discovery phase of a data analysis workflow, largely due to the lack tools for seamless iteration between data manipulation, modeling, and visualization. Even before the web, interactive and dynamic graphics were used by analysts to reveal structure in high-dimensional data, discover the unexpected, and quickly gather insights. As interactive graphics software shifted to a web-based platform, and sharing them became a reality, tools have generally shifted from an exploratory to an expository focus. The R package plotly aims to make interactive graphics practically useful for both exploratory and expository purposes -- among other things, it enables users of the popular ggplot2 package to transform their static graphics to an interactive web-based version, construct animations, and link multiple views to pose queries and make comparisons. Biography Carson Sievert is a freelance data scientist developing software and creating products that make data analysis more accessible, appealing, and efficient. During his PhD, he became maintainer of the R package plotly and was recognized with the John Chambers Statistical Software Award. He is also author and maintainer of numerous other R packages including: LDAvis, animint, pitchRx, and rdom.
