In April, city council asked staff to look into the issue of providing free transit fares to see how the lost revenue would affect OC Transpo, and to look at the benefits and pitfalls of such a policy. The city turned to consultant and transit expert Brendon Hemily who provided an outline of such a study. The city estimates Hemily’s report would take a year to complete and cost between $700,000 and $900,000. The mayor and two mayoral hopefuls say the proposed study of the cost to make transit free or more heavily subsidized isn’t it worth its projected $700,000 to $900,000 cost. “I’ve never been an advocate for this so-called free transit and it’s not free because someone has to pay for it,” Mayor Jim Watson said Wednesday.
