A mother and daughter's story – Intrepid Family Travel

Travelling as a solo parent with your kids is often challenging - always thinking about safety, and keeping them occupied, and making sure they are having fun and learning - it is hard work for every family, especially when there is just one of you responsible for everything. [Transcription] "Why do you like travelling with mummy?" "Because you’re my favourite girl!" "I’m your favourite girl? Can I have a kiss?" As a single parent, travelling can be overwhelming. You're always thinking ahead of: What do we need to be doing? Is she going to be safe? Am I going to be safe? Travelling with a group is very appealing for a single parent. Everything's taken care of, so I don't have to worry. She gets to play with other children, and meets other children on the trip. Travelling with other parents, I get downtime, I get to sit and chat, and have adult conversations. As a mum, I think it's amazing, watching her interact with all the other kids in the group, they seem to nurture her and take care of her. It's a really lovely thing to see, which I didn't really expect. Travelling in a group situation, she's learning a lot from the other kids, but also where we are, which is amazing, and they're teaching her new games, and they're really interactive with her, so I think that bond and the inclusiveness is really lovely to see, you know – having someone who's taking us around is a major highlight. As a mum, I think a reason why I was drawn, you know to do a trip like this, is because I don't want to have to think about every single detail. I take her travelling – not to tick boxes – I want her to grow up knowing that the world's a bigger place than just us and our life at home, and that there's different people and different cultures, you know?
