Last winter while visiting NW Wisconsin, I was asked to play music for an old farmer on his deathbed. I'd had met this charming character once before while getting an adjustment from a friend who's does chiropractic work. He was in line after me. This witty old fella had a youthful twinkle in his eye and a deep love for country music, even sprung in to a Hank senior song acapella. We talked briefly about how he knew my grandfather and may have sold him tractor machinery parts in the late 70s & 80s A year later his health had declined as folk's in their late 80s often experience When I was explained his situation/condition with the idea of a home hospices type concert in mind of course I said yes. I chose a handful of vintage country tunes and a couple originals then headed out to his homestead. I had expected it to be just him in his three daughters but when I arrived I found about 20 people, Aunt's uncles & cousins had all gathered around for this special occasion. It felt a bit like a private house show mixed with a celebration of life & death. There was even a Mennonite families there. I felt a bit shy of even my calmest & most wholesome material. But they were all very respectful & appreciative I had come. As I played the old tunes on my steel guitar the old boy laid back blissfully in his chair, smiling in his eyes and tapping his fingers perfectly in time. Much of the relatives doing the same and many of them in tears. Each of them thanking me as I left the house that day. Just three days later, as I was finishing Vonneguts slaughterhouse five for the second time where he famously repeats the phrase "So It Goes" I got a phone call that the old man had passed. I hung up the phone and closed the book, I listen to the 30 below windchill tearing outside the thin cabin walls and then wrote this song front to back Enjoy!
