In today’s episode, we are going to take a look at Chinese Navy’s Type 055-class Is this class a destroyer or cruiser? If you eager to know more, don’t go anywhere and stay tuned. The People Liberation Army Navy’s (PLAN) Type 055 guided-missile destroyer Nanchang was commissioned at a naval base in the city of Qingdao, located in the eastern China’s Shandong Province on 12 January 2021. With the NATO designated name of Renhai-class, Nanchang was the first new warship to enter service with the Navy in 2020. Due to its dimensions and range of capabilities, the ship was classified as a cruiser by the United States. In addition, as the United States Navy defines a large multi-mission surface combatant with flagship as a cruiser, it can be concluded that the U.S. expects Type 055 to have a similar role as the Ticonderoga-class cruiser. Given its superiority, the Renhai-class is arguably more than a destroyer. It has the potential to outperform its predecessors, the Luyang-class destroyers, in terms of strategic air defense, anti-surface, and subsurface capability. It outperforms any of China's neighbors' surface combatants of a similar class, particularly the South Korean Sejong-class destroyer and the Japanese Atago-class destroyer. The warship is definitely a great addition to strengthen China’s blue-water combat capacity. At the same time, the cruiser-like destroyer will also affect the balance in the region.
