3-Layer Z-Curve of NFR Back in 2002, a book finally saw the daylight after some 5 years of labour by eminent writer Arup Kumar Dutta who was later to be honoured with Padma Shri. It was a book on the birth of present-day Northeast Frontier Railway, and to be frank there has been no other such comprehensive history book published by any other railway zone. Most other zonal railway history publications are of the coffee-table nature. The credit goes to both the writer and the then General Manager B. M. S. Bisht. Anyway, as I was reading through the fascinating accounts, one particular sentence got etched in my mind ever since: "The ABR hill section is one of the most curvaceous in India. At km 80.9 from Lumding one can see the line simultaneously at 3 places, with the Daotuhaja station on one of the tracks." And I tried to capture this in 2013. Failed to notice anything in the darkness. Then again in 2014. I missed my train and had to pass through this exact portion after the darkness. Then in 2016 September, I noticed that tunnel from the uppermost layer of the alignment, but failed to realise that it's really that portion! Then 2019 onwards I have tried several times to capture these three lines while onboard a train -- needless to say it all had been worthless. And therefore, I decided to ignore the slip disc pain and tread the hills with another railfan. And although Kanchanjunga Express had already passed through, we managed to capture the unusual load in that part of the country -- a Container rake led by single GE WDG4G negotiating the massive Z-curve in NFR Hill Section with Daotuhaja at the end of the bend.
