This is the first of Johanna Senfter's six easy pieces for beginners, composed around 1900 when she was still a student studying at Dr.Hoch's Conservatorium in Frankfurt, where I also studied for a time. (Music published by Schott.) It is a lullaby in ternary form. This is the easiest of the set, but even so it is hardly suitable for beginners (and the final piece called 'Ernste Gedanken' is actually quite demanding: at least grade 7 level required). Johanna Senfter was born in 1879 and died in 1961. She was something of a recluse and did little to promote her music actively during her lifetime (a period of great unrest and upheaval in Germany, of course). Her later music shows the influence of her mentor and teacher Max Reger. In terms of style and expression she is completely out of step with her contemporaries and the piano music of her maturity - some of which has been recorded - is difficult in every sense of the word. But she is a fine composer whose work awaits rediscovery.
