In 2015 when the holiday decorating team for Universal Orlando were in their warehouse preparing the decorations for the big switchover from Halloween to Christmas in the parks, they noticed there were some lights on this tree that wouldn't light on one side and went to investigate. Eventually finding a small squirrel who had tucked himself away inside the tree and was nibbling on some of the wires and the lights while building his nest. The blue lights tended to be his favorite. This rascally rodent who stowed away in the festive decor gave Universal their newest Christmas tradition. Earl the Squirrel. Universal started adding a little toy Squirrel chewing on some blue lights to their big Christmas tree tucked away as an inside joke for the Team Members. It quickly became a tradition for guests too. Seeking out the little fellow and finding his new hiding spot on the tree every year. This was only the beginning. Over the last several years, Universal has begun setting up a year round Tribute Store. A heavily themed shop selling unique and niche merchandise. The biggest selling point is that the theme and décor is constantly being updated. When it came time to design the first Holiday Season iteration of the Tribute Store in 2020, Universal decided to upgrade Earl from Easter Egg to mascot. The first year they still kept his presence to a minimum and hadn't quite figured out his look, but by the time 2021 came around they came up with the perfect design and went all in on the scrappy little squirrel. Earl was a walk around character taking photos with guests, he was all over merchandise and the store itself, he was a mascot for the Mistletoe Pines theming they added to parts of City Walk for the holiday season. Earl’s Tree Farm is the official provider of Christmas trees to the whole resort Even beyond Christmas time, throughout the year each version of the Tribute Store features teases and references to the nutty little guy. In an interview with Insider, Robert Cametti, Universal Orlando's director of visual merchandising, explained Earl's appeal. "I think people love him because he's so darn adorable." I think there's a bit more to it than that. Earl is a perfect mascot for Universal because he is more than just cute. He has a classic cartoon aesthetic, but always with an ironic edge. A bit too saccharin sweet looking in a way that circles back to being a bit odd looking. Satirizing the over sanitized cutesy commercialism side of both Christmas and the very concept of cartoon mascots, but done in a way makes it clear that the parody is coming from people with a genuine love for these things. It never feels polished and almost always feels tacky, but in a way that screams "look how much fun this kitschy nonsense can be if you embrace kitschy nonsense! I'm tacky and I'm proud" This perfect blend of sincerity and subversion has always been where Universal excels and feels the most unique. Earl the Squirrel is like Universal’s Sonic the Hedgehog.
