A lost segment intended for Top of the Pops has been found! Some historical background - In the nineteenth century, prior to the invention of celluloid, film was stored on cotton sheeting, approximately 36” wide, which was rolled inside wooden drums around a central spindle. It was considered very fragile, as washing the cotton would erase the film. All indications within the video point to it being British in origin and, probably, Scottish, since ‘Fiery’ Dan was a known performer in the Central Lowlands of Scotland around that time. Videos like this would be made in the far-flung regions of the UK and then transported to Manchester for inclusion in the longest-running TV music show in the world - Top of the Pops. So this video would likely be filmed in Glasgow, as there was a BBC presence in the city. As the week’s UK ‘Top 10’ records were published on a Tuesday, frantic arrangements would be made to have any acts, for which the Manchester studio was not convenient, filmed at the nearest venue to a BBC crew and which the performer(s) could reach quickly, with the film being transported to Manchester in time for the Thursday evening showing of TotP. Roads were not what they are in the 21st century and the journey had to be made by horse-drawn transport, so this was a risky business. The cotton-based film had to be kept dry and clean and the route passed through the Borders region of Southern Scotland/Northern England. This region, as we know to this day, is populated by Bandits and so video carts were sometimes ambushed and the contents used as leverage for ransom money. However, due to the short life cycle of a TotP video (Tuesday until Thursday every week), it is unlikely that this strategy would yield a positive result very often and the video sheets would be passed on to anyone who was willing to pay.
